customize your curtains and add a more personal touch to it.
Curtains may seem complicated at first. But if you know some sewing techniques you can do it yourself. Some
imagination and skill will help you in making your own bathroom window curtains. Now, let’s get started with your
sewing lessons.
10 Easy Steps
Measure your windows. Include the length and width of your window frame and decide on how long your curtains
will be. Your curtains need not conform to your window frame. All you have to consider is how much of your
window will be covered.
After getting the measurements, choose the right fabric for your curtains. Taffeta, cotton and linen is best
for that cozy look. Heavy drapes will need materials such as velvet, silk or satin.
Be sure to use thread that is of the same color with your fabric. Do not ever use a thread which has a
contrasting color.
With regards to lining, cut your lining fabric the same as your curtain fabric and then pin them
together.
If you can’t decide whether to prewash or not, it is actually up to your preference. If you want your
fabrics to be crisp, then don’t prewash them. Washing your materials though can shrink the material if they
have not been preshrunk.
Whatever your preference would be regarding washing the fabrics, you will always need to iron them. Ironing
will flatten out wrinkles. This also makes sewing easy.
Cut your fabrics according to the measurements you have taken. For single paneled windows, it would be best
if you keep your curtains in a single sheet. As for double paneled windows, cut your fabric equally in two
parts
After you have all your materials ready, mark down the hem lines. These should be half inch to quarter of an
inch wide. Iron the lines for neat sewing.
Hem sew three sides of the curtain fabric leaving one short side unstitched. Fold it towards the non-printed
side and machine sew or hand stitch it. If you wish to add curtain weights, then leave both short sides
unstitched.
One short side should be allotted for the curtain rod. For a rod that is an inch thick, sew a two-inch slot.
Allow for a 2 inch ruffle at the top. You will have to fold a large amount of fabric for this.
These effective sewing tips will aid you making your own curtains. just always remember
to allot an inch or less for the hem lines. Also, make sure that your slot for the curtain rod allows for easy
sliding of the rod. With this, you can now make other basic home improvement projects aside from bathroom window
curtains.
